BEAUTY: Painting--Bo Bartlett

Bo Bartlett is an extraordinary American realist figurative painter in the style of Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer. Like these artists, he looks to the commonplace American experience for inspiration but his execution is often surreal and dream-like. In fact, the first painting shown here, titled Dreamland, is the cover for one of my favorite surreal books, the lovely THE THIN PLACE by Kathryn Davis. But when I saw his heartbreaking For Matthew Shepard, shown at the bottom, I knew I had found a new favorite painter.

From top to bottom: Dreamland; Tarmac; A Miraculous Outcome; Civil War; For Matthew Shepard
