BEAUTY: Clothing--Jean Paul Gaultier

The current Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (which I wrote about here) opened with a room full of navy and white sailor stripes, one of Gaultier's signature looks. And his Spring Summer '13 collection, which was debuted as a lookbook only, featured Gaultier's classic sailor stripes but with a big dose of foreign ports of call. Red and yellow infiltrate the blue stripes while exotic turbans suggest distant, impenetrable cultures. Gaultier's sailor boy landed in Morocco and has "gone native." (As I have noted here on many occasions, it is fascinating how some odd flourish like the pattern of a brick wall or, in this case, turbans pop up in more than one designer's collection. We also saw turbans, or pagri as they are called in India, in the gorgeous Etro collection at Milano Moda Uomo last week, seen here.)
