"This Is The Thing"

In honor of National Poetry Month, I am posting new work by myself every Wednesday (previously here, here, and here).
Here is "This Is The Thing."

This Is The Thing

The planets wobble while spinning on their axes and
travel a drunken orbit in a little leaping dance,
laughing at us, mocking.
Some are orbiting further and further away—
we can’t even say that they will always be here.
Worlds turn on imperfection in this tour of broken stars:
our star erases everything.
There is no new, no clean, just different states of
disintegration.
The true song of the universe must be the sound of
molecules collapsing.
Meanwhile, the soup is getting cold…
