L'Arc Majeur

Sculptor Bernar Venet originally conceived of an arc around a road in 1984 but the production of the piece proved to be 35 years in the making. Finally, in November 2019, the Arc Majeur, the world’s largest steel sculpture, was unveiled. Its two monumental arcs--of which the higher culminates at 60 metres--embrace the E411 motorway at Lavaux-Sainte-Anne, Belgium. It moulds itself to the landscape, as though its curves continue beneath the earth.

The construction was complicated. An experienced team of four welders and three fitters took turns over several months--for a total of more than 6500 hours--to create the monumental work. The advanced and innovative non-destructive testing technique, phased array ultrasonic testing, made it possible to check welds more quickly and above all to detect more completely the indications that ensure weld quality.
