BEAUTY: Clothing--Walter Van Beirendonck

Although Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck's name is not that familiar, he's been around for many years designing clothes for U2's "PopMart" Tour, and receiving the honorary title of "Cultural Ambassador of Flanders." He is known for a neon color palette but his Spring '11 collection is a bit on the pastel side... apropos for spring.

He is also known for elements of surreality in his designs which are apparent in this current collection. Although everything is a rather conservative tight plaid or small print, he uses the patterns to make outlandish things such as (from top to bottom) corsets for men; rouched harnesses; pieces with holes that spell out words like "HOPE" which seem simple but are unique; a plaid jumpsuit combined with an odd red backpack that is actually, a, um... shoulder pack(?); message tee shirts; and fantastic beaded breastplates.

I also really like that he uses muscled and big bearish guys as well as slim young men for models. It feels inclusive and sexy.

His website is wild and worth a look--especially the video archives.
