"Camera's Rolling" by Agnes Obel

From her new album "Myopia," here is Agnes Obel's delicate, haunting, enigmatic song "Camera's Rolling."

The script is burning
On heavy fuel
No time to lose
What will you do?

Camera’s rolling
What will you do?
What will you do?
that you can’t undo?

The gun is loaded
What will you do?
Cruel gifted fool
What will you do?

"Life's What You Make It" by Talk Talk

Today is the first anniversary of the death of musical genius Mark Hollis, lead singer and songwriter of the post-rock band Talk Talk. And I am listening to the phenomenal "Life's What You Make It," released in 1986 on their "The Colour of Spring" album...and this song sounds as powerful and fresh today. The tumbling, abrupt drums, the otherworldly organ, the blisteringly grave guitar, and the unchained earnest vocals singing such unadorned yet crucial lyrics all meld to make this a timeless--and genreless--song. While I have posted this gem before, the band's Youtube channel recently posted this official video from the time which features a slightly different version: Hollis' vocals sound like they might be a different take and the animal sounds at the top and end are unique to the video.

Baby, life's what you make it
Can't escape it
Baby, yesterday's favourite
Don't you hate it?

(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)

Baby, life's what you make it
Don't backdate it
Baby, don't try to shade it
Beauty's naked

(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)
What you make it

Baby, life's what you make it
Celebrate it, anticipate it
Yesterday's faded, nothing can change it
Life's what you make it

(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it

If you are unfamiliar with their catalog, aside from this and their other hit "It's My LIfe," I urge you to do yourself a huge favor and listen to not only "The Colour of Spring" but also the incredible sonic masterpieces "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock."

BEAUTY: Painting--Karen Smidth

I am loving the fog-drenched images and muted color palette (and the fact that you can still see patches of the muslin canvas  below) of the work of artist Karen Smidth.

Her artist statement:
"THE LANDSCAPE gives me a wonderful excuse to paint. It allows me to travel under the heavenly skies and search for the essential vistas and split seconds of time that will carry me through my next series of paintings.

When I arrived in California from Denmark in the mid-1980s I was both mesmerized and taken aback by the vastness of the natural panorama along with its aridness and its wildness. It made me feel homesick for my small, wet Danish land. I refused to fall in love with the west coast of the North American Continent. I did not want to understand its subtle song, warm scent, relentless light, perfect mountains and temperamental coast.

In the early 2000s drawing and painting became my daily obsession and with it my senses were opened for what I had not been able to receive. ––My heart broke to this land.

My paintings are reactions to the light, color, and shapes that I see in the landscape. I use the landscape as a pattern or skeleton for what my day as a painter brings; my attempt to understand life. Most paintings have their ugly moments. They need to be wiped, sanded and over painted and this process builds their character. Some paintings have strong connections to a specific moment is time, but they all relate to a place of belonging as well as allowing room for the hue of the day.

THANK YOU for your support —for letting me paint. xoxks"

"That Sound" by Sam Fender

Ah yes...that sound.

"That Sound" by Sam Fender (who sings the profoundly moving "Dead Boys" previously here) out now on his debut album "Hypersonic Missiles."

The importance of music.

Serotonin stole the moment
The best of me was left under the bed sheets on that somber morning
Dying for some REM
My mind is always troubled with
Where have I been and where am I going

When my head comes crashing down
They're all waiting at the bottom tryna claw me down beneath it all
Every night I beg that sound
It's the greatest revelation
It’s the only thing that keeps me grounded

I need to hear that sound
I need to hear that sound

Loaded vampires butter me up
Drop names and sniff up residue whilst boasting about their revenue
At home I face these green-eyed beasts
Everybody wants to leave but no one wants to see you do it

When my head comes crashing down
They’re all waiting at the bottom tryna claw me down beneath it all
Every night I beg that sound
It's the greatest revelation
It's the only thing that keeps me grounded

I need to hear that sound
I need to hear that sound

When my head comes crashing down
They're all waiting at the bottom tryna claw me down beneath it all
Every night I beg that sound
It's the greatest revelation
It’s the only thing that keeps me grounded

I need to hear that sound
I need to hear that sound

BEAUTY: Painting--Alessandro Tomasetti

The wonderful portrait work of artist Alessandro Tomasetti is at once photorealistic and so painterly...nearly Impressionistic. Look at the wide smudges of color on foreheads, and the flourishes of brushstrokes in hair...

The Penguin Coffee Shop on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica, 1959

This is a glorious example of classic Googie architecture from Southern California in the 50s and 60s: The Penguin Coffee Shop on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica was a masterwork of Googie pioneers Armet & Davis.

This gem has been lovingly restored and is now a Mel's Diner--they kept a penguin for the sign!

BEAUTY: Painting--Bran Sólo

Spanish artist Bran Sólo paints fascinating dream-like portraits of wistful men with secrets...

He also created a version of Tarot cards consisting only of 22 arcana cards.

"The TAROT DE LAGUNA conceived and illustrated by Bran Sólo, is a tool that redesigns the concept of Tarot. Based on psychology, not magic, it is a card game for personal development that helps verbalize the issues that condition our personality. It consists of 22 arcana, different from those that make up the traditional Tarot, that inhabit the same universe called Laguna. In its free and personal interpretation lies the "magic" that opens any door. Laguna Tarot does not guess, but it helps you to better understand the issues of your personality that may be unconsciously affected. It works through the mechanisms of free association of classical psychoanalysis."
