BEAUTY: Clothing--Dolce and Gabbana

At dinner or cocktail parties, I love to play old fashioned parlor games where people answer interesting or provocative questions, to get conversation started or to keep it flowing. And one of my go-to questions is: if you could visit any three time periods in history, and you will be provided with magical skills to speak the language along with clothing and enough currency to live for 24 hours, which three would you choose and why. And one of my three is almost always (depending on my mood or curiosity of the moment) that lovely time between wars when Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant graced the screen, when men wore suits and a sleeping car on a railway line was luxury travel.

Dolce and Gabbana never fail to choose a sumptuous, luxurious theme and for their Fall-Winter '19-'20 collection at Milano Moda Uomo, they chose one of my time periods, the 20s and 30s. I feel this is reinforcing a move we are seeing from many other labels and designers and that is a move away from "ath-leisure" and street wear, back toward more structured and tailored pieces. Many designers are seeing that young men are feeling left out, they want to look sharper and smarter, they want to "dress up" more. Men were quite dapper then and D and G showed their interpretation in a show that extended to a whopping 127 individual ensembles! Here are just a few of them below. Gorgeous double-breasted suits, references to varsity sweaters, beach cabana bathing costumes, smoking jackets, fur-collared overcoats, it's all here.

And of course, Dolce and Gabbana being who they are, they increased the glamour by pulling the collection into traditional Italian territory and produced a fantasia of suits in Italian brocade...with a sprinkling of sequins for good measure, just in case you're going to the opera.
