Dolce and Gabbana Alta Moda/Alta Sartoria 2025

Wow, please take the time to watch the video of this jaw-dropping show of Dolce and Gabbana's most recent Alta Moda collection for women inspired by the culture, architecture, and imagery of ancient and 1950s Rome, presented at the Roman Forum itself! At sunset, a hundred-plus extras dressed in costumes from Fellini's "Satyricon" filled the show space where models paraded looks made of breastplates and sections of Roman soldier armor or skinny cocktail dresses from the Dolce Vita era when Rome was reborn after WW II and Anita Ekberg frolicked in the Trevi Fountain. Each piece is literally a one-of-a-kind work of art...if a client buys one, it is the only one in existence.

And not to be outdone by the spectacle, D&G showed their Alta Sartoria collection (the men's version) the next evening, also at sunset, at the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. Inspired by the Catholic Church, the collection is a wild riff on ecclesiastical clothing surpassing anything even the Vatican could produce! Models, each wearing glasses and hair set in pincurls like cherubs, walked out of the Castel and down a gold carpet shaped, appropriately enough, like a cross while assembled cardinals in red watched from plinths on the Ponte Sant'Angelo.

And take a look at this short glimpse into the making of one of the looks...the quality is mind boggling.

I would bet money that D&G have seen--and were inspired by--the famous (infamous) Vatican fashion show segment from Fellini's incredible mockumentary travelogue "Roma." It is at once hilarious and absolutely terrifying, quite on purpose.

Dolce and Gabbana Alta Sartoria 2024

WOW. Dolce and Gabbana's Alta Sartoria show of menswear opened with a DAZZLING parade, literally, of traditional Sardinian clothing and costumes, including Carnevale costumes (previously here) and oxen carrying carts full of singing Sardinians, all on a carpet of flower petals. It is just incredible. Please do watch the video below which starts at the beginning of the parade with peeling bells. I think D&G have done an incredible job of exposing the world to Sardinian culture...it is all stunningly beautiful.

Of course please do stay for the runway show because the garments are all based on the traditional costumes just seen in the parade. All gorgeous...

BEAUTY: Clothing--Dolce and Gabbana Alta Sartoria 2021

Since its inception in 2015, Dolce and Gabbana's Alta Sartoria line has been presenting some haute-haute couture pieces in exquisite locations like Florence, Sicily, and now Venice. Last week, the 2021 Alta Sartoria menswear portion was presented at the Venice Arsenale (the usual location for the Biennale) on a floating mirrored walkway. Of course the clothing was exquisite--many or most one-of-a-kind pieces--but the most striking thing about this presentation was the hail storm that pelted the models and celebrity/billionaire crowd in attendance with hefty marble-sized chunks of ice toward the end of the show!

Featuring clothing that referenced this ancient floating city and its local arts, garments paid homage to the mosaic work of the Basilica di San Marco, the architecture of the Doge's Palace, Murano glass (shirts were made of Murano glass beads, and models sported chandelier earrings of the fabled material!), and the sumptuous silks (some printed with views of Piazza San Marco) and brocades that have been associated with this magical city for centuries. There was even a mind-boggling shirt made of feathers and gold gilding.
