Bill McClintock's Mash Ups
Sometimes mash ups (the practice of editing two disparate or perhaps similar pop songs together into a single new musical piece) can be a little like annoying novelty songs from the 70s or 80s, but every once in a while someone hits on a combination that feels so right. And then there is someone like Bill McClintock who creates mash ups on an entirely different level for his Youtube channel.
Although it requires some familiarity with these artists catalogs to appreciate the full quirky, unexpected shock of it all, the original source material is enough in the zeitgeist so as not be completely lost.
Take a listen to this jaw dropping extravaganza of Nine Inch Nails with their brutal song "Closer,", Ohio Players with their phenomenal funk hit "Fire," and a bit of special guest David Bowie with his legendary song "Fame."
Then there is the completely surprising marriage of Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Lovin' Fun" with Earth Wind and Fire's "September." Who could have possibly seen this one coming?
And then this miracle of rock and funk rocks and gets down! Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" and Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion." Let's just call this song what it is: awesome.

"The Perfect Drug" by Nine Inch Nails
I am thrilled that Nine Inch Nails finally posted the video of their amazing song "The Perfect Drug" to their official Youtube page. It has been 22 years since this song was released and I still love it.
The visuals are based on the marvelous work of the artist and illustrator Edward Gorey (previously here). Watch the video and you will see recreations of some of Gorey's most famous imagery:
And this was before Trent Reznor bulked up, but I think he is heart-stoppingly gorgeous here. His pose atop the plinth at the :54 mark makes me melt.

"Dear World" by Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor). "Dear World." From the December 2016 EP "Not The Actual Events."
Holy sh*t.
Yes, everyone seems to be asleep
Hey look, you didn't even notice
Couldn't even tell
Just when it started... happening
Maybe just as well
After all, everything is getting unfamiliar now
Trajectory in decline
And we've become obselete
A frame at a time
I'm locked inside here
Have to stay
With people who aren't here
All the way
Pictures and faces
On display
With people who aren't here
All the way (all the way)...
It is coming, and you didn't even notice, yeah you didn't even notice... (you were missing)...
[Left channel:]
Dear world, I can hardly recognize you anymore
And yet I remain certain
There is an answer in you
I feel like I have lived so long sometimes
Run out of things to try to do
I can't concentrate my way out
What about?...
I have been entirely patient
No, no, not this time
[Right channel:]
I am leaving because I can't recognize who I have been
You go on spoiling
Hey look, it's happening
Without me you didn't even notice
Of course it's been happening all along, permanent intervals
As you become obsolete, who are you?
Oh this place...
I can't concentrate
I begin to go through another of that we have been
But I know I can't trust myself with this again
I'm locked inside here
Have to stay
With people who aren't here
All the way

"Came Back Haunted" by NIN
The throat is deep and the mouth is wide
Saw some things on the other side
Made me promise to never tell
But you know me, I can't help myself
Now I've got something you have to see
They put something inside of me
The smile is red and its eyes are black
I don't think I'll be coming back
I don't believe it
I had to see it
I came back haunted
I came back haunted
I said goodbye but I --
I had to try
I came back haunted
C-C-C-came back haunted
Everywhere now reminding me
I am not who I used to be
I'm afraid this has just begun
Consequences for what I've done, yeah
I don't believe it
I had to see it
I came back -- I came back haunted
C-C-C-came back haunted
I said goodbye but I --
I had to try
I came back -- I came back haunted
I C-C-C-came back haunted
They tried to tell me but I --
I couldn't stop myself and I --
I came back -- I came back haunted
C-C-C-came back haunted
Just can't
Stop
New release "Hesitation Marks" due on September 3rd, 2013.

BEAUTY: Photography--David Slijper

Fashion photographer extraordinaire David Slijper shot these images of contemporary dandies. A waxed handlebar moustache has never looked so sexy and relevant!http://www.davidslijper.com/
The photos remind me of the fantastic Nine Inch Nails video for the song "The Perfect Drug," based on the work of legendary illustrator Edward Gorey.
