The Hometown Moon by SYN Architects

Synarchitects have created an amazing public space and chapel in China near Mount Tai. Called The Hometown Moon, the structure features a half moon skylight above the building, floating on and reflected in a pool of water, while below the same half moon can be seen reflected on a silver ceiling. It is a stunning creation.

Regular readers may know that one of my day jobs (I have a few) is as an interior designer. I see a lot of furniture and furnishings in the course of my day, and some of the most iconic pieces are some of my favorites. Furniture designed by famous furniture designers (or architects who also designed the furniture that went into their architecture) are very special pieces.

I want to show you the delightful work of master illustrator Jorge Arévalo. He created a series called "Architects and Chairs" where he puts the architect on or near the celebrated chair they designed which defines their individual legacy. The precise, pointy style in which he renders people feels a little retro, perfect for the subject of Modernist furniture. All these images are available as prints at the shop on his website!

The Cryptide Shoe by Stefan Henrich

Hot on the heels of London and Milan Fashion Weeks (pun intended), here is an amazing 3D printed shoe by Stephan Henrich, robotic designer and architect. Called The Cryptide, it features a very unique toe structure. And yes, it has been printed and the shoe can actually be worn!

The "Kujdane" A-Frame Cabin by Shomali Design

Iranian architects Shomali Design have proposed a new type of A-Frame cabin whose design, while remaining true to the original idea of such a structure, shows some beautiful, modern flourishes. The sides do not come together in an expected way, the main deck seems to be cantilevered, and there is a fascinating central glass hole or flue that lets rain and snow fall through the center of the house, collecting in a pond beneath the home. 

There is something so familiar about this structure. Maybe it's because when I as a child, I used to make model homes like this out of small cardboard boxes.
