Faire du Winter Activities

When I was in high school, my French teacher, a native French speaker, fell ill and we were sent a substitute with the most overbearing American accent, and apparently no ear for inflection. As she explained the use of the word "faire" which means to make or do, she used winter activities as an example... "faire du skiing" is "to go skiing," but of course it came out of her mouth as "Fayer dew skeeeee-ing." I can't think of skiing, skating, or sledding without hearing her in my mind...oh, the funny things we remember...

Tusen

Restaurant Tusen is perched on the ski slopes by the Helags and Skars mountains in Ramundberget, Sweden. This gorgeous building designed by architects Ulla Alberts and Hans Murman is faced with locally harvested birch logs on its northern face. The southern face is open and serves as the entrance for weary skiers looking for respite, sustenance, and grog! The logs keep the snow and give the building the sense that it is rising up from the snow, embedded into the mountainside itself...
