Porta Estel-lar

This interactive art/theater collaboration between Eduardo Cajal (owner of the air plane), Playmodes, and MID (Media Interactive Design) takes audience members on a six-minute journey to outer space and other dimensions using state of the art lighting and sound. Entitled Porta Estel-lar, it was installed in Spain in the Ciutadella Park during the Barcelona local holidays of La Mercé, September of 2015.

The Overview Effect

"I really believe that if the political leaders of the world could see their planet from a distance of 100,000 miles their outlook could be fundamentally changed. That all-important border would be invisible, that noisy argument silenced. The tiny globe would continue to turn, serenely ignoring its subdivisions, presenting a unified façade that would cry out for unified understanding, for homogeneous treatment. The earth must become as it appears: blue and white, not capitalist or Communist; blue and white, not rich or poor; blue and white, not envious or envied."
--Michael Collins, Gemini 10 & Apollo 11 astronaut

This film was taken by the Mercury-bound MESSENGER spacecraft during a gravity assist swingby of its home planet on Aug. 2, 2005. Several hundred images, taken with the wide-angle camera in MESSENGER's Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS), were sequenced into a movie documenting the view from MESSENGER as it departed Earth. Comprising 358 frames taken over 24 hours, the movie follows Earth through one complete rotation. The spacecraft was 40,761 miles (65,598 kilometers) above South America when the camera started rolling on Aug. 2. It was 270,847 miles (435,885 kilometers) away from Earth - farther than the Moon's orbit - when it snapped the last image on Aug. 3.

This film is inspiring and utterly heartbreaking to me on so many levels. Don't make me explain why.
