BEAUTY: Installation--Oscar Oiwa

For his one-man show at Japan House in São Paulo, Brazil, Oscar Oiwa created an immersive installation entitled Paradise. Inside an enormous inflatable vinyl balloon, Oiwa drew a fantastical landscape of a forest with paths and streams and swirling clouds above, all in black marker.

"I’ve always enjoyed drawing, which I consider the most basic way of expressing myself visually," said Oiwa in a press release regarding the large-scale work. "A pencil and a blank sheet— there is no simpler medium than that."

I think it's ironic that the piece is called Paradise but is presented in black and white...

Paradise is on view as part of Oscar Oiwa in Paradise – Drawing the Ephemeral at Japan House in São Paulo through June 3rd, 2018. The video below really gives you the true sense of the piece--be sure to watch!
