BEAUTY: Installation--Oscar Oiwa

For his one-man show at Japan House in São Paulo, Brazil, Oscar Oiwa created an immersive installation entitled Paradise. Inside an enormous inflatable vinyl balloon, Oiwa drew a fantastical landscape of a forest with paths and streams and swirling clouds above, all in black marker.

"I’ve always enjoyed drawing, which I consider the most basic way of expressing myself visually," said Oiwa in a press release regarding the large-scale work. "A pencil and a blank sheet— there is no simpler medium than that."

I think it's ironic that the piece is called Paradise but is presented in black and white...

Paradise is on view as part of Oscar Oiwa in Paradise – Drawing the Ephemeral at Japan House in São Paulo through June 3rd, 2018. The video below really gives you the true sense of the piece--be sure to watch!

BEAUTY: Installation--Henrique Oliveira

Using his signature material of wood, artist Henrique Oliveira (previously here) just installed his largest work to date at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade in São Paulo, Brazil. A series of tunnels snakes through the cavernous galleries which Oliveira covered with thinly sliced pieces of flexible wood leftover from construction debris. And museum goers are invited to walk the tunnels. Experiencing this stunning interactive installation must feel like burrowing into a subterranean world only moles see... as if you are actually within the root systems of a forest!

And in a powerful political statement concerning the ideas of refuse, economics, and how society treats poverty, Oliveira morphs the wooden tunnels into a replica of the shantytowns/slums or favelas in Brazil.

BEAUTY: Interior--Fabrizio Rollo

Dapper dandy and frequent subject of The Sartorialist (Scott Schuman), Fabrizio Rollo was an editor at Brazilian Vogue and is currently an editor at House Beautiful Brasil. Therefore, his own apartment in São Paulo is featured in the December issue of Elle Decor.

His home is a wild, eclectic mix of Beaux-Arts objets and pieces from the 30s and 70s. I have always said that if one puts together all the styles one loves, the overall sense will work because it comes from a single mind and single source. How could one not choose something that would go with everything else?

Although located in Brazil, Rollo's apartment has a lovely European vibe, and a certain cavalier grouping of pieces and colors and patterns that indicate a true collector. It is a wonderful, Old World, cultured sense that just does not see much play here in the United States.
