BEAUTY: Interiors--Paolo Castellarin's Milan Apartment

Italian dentist and interior designer (yes, really) Paolo Castellarin and his husband Didier Bonnin have quite an amazing--and red--apartment (with blue ceilings) in the Arco della Pace neighborhood of Milan. It is chock full of iconic modernist furniture and furnishings juxtaposed with paintings and objects of antiquity.

Neil Barrett and Carlo Barone Lumaga's Apartment in Milan

I've been going through a mass of interior design magazines that have stacked up here in my studio, and have found some treasures to share. First up is the Milanese apartment clothing designer Neil Barrett (previously here) shares with his husband Carlo Barone Lumaga. I love the dark drama (note: the walls appear black but are actually a deep, sable brown!) and restraint of their home...the play of textures and materials along with the juxtaposition of antique and modern makes it seem luxurious and intriguing.

BEAUTY: Interior--Martin Cooper and Karen Suen-Cooper's 1790s Federal-Style Farmhouse

Martin Cooper and Karen Suen-Cooper purchased a dilapidated 1790s Federalist-style home in Old Chatham, New York in 2005 and began restoration work in 2007. And the results are charming. I love how the couple have incorporated some unexpected--and more contemporary--elements (steel balls in the entry, cotemporary photography and modern track-armed sofas in the yellow art-filled living room) into a home filled with antiques. Miraculously, none of it feels fussy or brittle. I especially love the Etruscan-orange sitting room walls (a beautiful wallcovering from Brunschwig & Fils) and an amazing black-lacquered dining room!
