"Here Come July" by Scritti Politti 2026

Yep, here comes July...I'm gonna watch the worlds crash, burn, collide...I think we all will. Hang on.

The incredible Green Gartside and Scritti Politti (previously here): some of the smartest pop music ever recorded.

Here come July
The world is there for me to share
Here come July
It sort of feels so hyper-real

Here come July
To test you all before the fall
Here come July
The end of school, the death of cool

Here come July now
And everybody's burning
My summer's high now
The world has never been so happy in its heart of hearts

Here come July
To sort the men from boys again
Here come July
To melt away the need to say

Here come July now
The heat'll hurt your feelings
It's beautified now
The sun will scorch the pavements of all piety and sin

It doesn't mean nothing, it doesn't mean sh*t
How can I be a part of it?
It doesn't mean nothing, it doesn't mean spit
How can I be a part of it?

It doesn't mean nothing
Some things never do to me

I'll mean the world to you
Maybe I could double all the negatives we know

Here come July
I love it makes it hard to take
So why d'you lie?
To me about the truth will out

Here come July now
And I can't hear your lipgloss
No case to try now
The sun will be on subterfuge, iniquity and you

It doesn't mean nothing, it doesn't mean sh*t
How can I be a part of it?
It doesn't mean nothing, it doesn't mean spit
How can I be a part of it?

Here come July now
Here it comes (woah)
Here we come
I'm gonna crash, gonna burn, gonna watch as the worlds collide
I'm gonna crash, gonna burn, gonna watch as the worlds collide

(It doesn't mean nothing)
Here come July now (it doesn't mean nothing)
Here come July now.

Flashback: Scritti Politti

Scritti Politti (here)--one of my favorite groups from yesteryear, and a highly influential outfit fronted by Green Gartside, previously here--just added to their Youtube channel some rarely seen versions of videos for two songs from their sophomore release "Cupid and Psyche '85."

"Perfect Way" opens the album, and "The Word Girl" is the first track on side two. Aside from the music (melodies that are "pop" but also musically skewed, a bit like Sondheim...the notes don't always go where one's ear wants them to go) and the instrumentation (while other musical acts of the time used sequencers, they really were the kings), just look at Green Gartside and his sheer, pure, breathtaking beauty. Seriously. And that voice...like an angel.

I saw them live in San Francisco many years ago...but they just performed "Cupid and Psyche '85" in its entirety at venues across the UK this past September and October. Oh, how I wish I could have seen that.

The Poetry of Rock n' Roll: "Brushed With Oil, Dusted With Powder"

To observe National Poetry Month, once a week I am featuring lyrics of rock n' roll or pop songs that also double as exquisite poetry.

I am a huge fan of the 70's/80s/still-recording (and touring!) band Scritti Politti--and I can't believe I have yet to post their lyrics during National Poetry Month. Formed in 1977 in Leeds by singer-songwriter Green Gartside, the band first operated as a sort of post-punk vehicle for Green's societal and political views. I found them in the 80s when they released their second album domestically, a thrilling, dizzying miracle of synthesizers called "Cupid & Psyche 85." But more than anything, Green loved to play with language and words. After an 11 year hiatus, he came back with a fascinating hybrid of an album called "Anomie & Bonhomie" which mixed his signature Scritti sound with hip hop artists. But this song, "Brushed With Oil, Dusted With Powder" is a slower, more acoustic affair. Its enigmatic, atmospheric sense reads like a Sam Spade short story. Take a read and see what narrative unfolds for you.

Brushed With Oil, Dusted With Powder
by Green Gartside

Brushed with oil, dusted with powder
The day began to decline
A broken door, a hotel bedroom
The sun cut in through the blind (oh but I tell you)
The officer asked "How did it start?"
Oh sh*t, "You know, I wish I knew," I said
"On Highbury Fields, the Westside Highway
Or here in the Hollywood hills"

In a black and white, to Orange County
The sky was a beautiful blue
A pack of lights, some keys they found there
They wondered how much I knew (oh but I tell you)
The officer asked "How did it start?"
Oh sh*t, "You know, I wish I knew," I said
"On Highbury Fields, the Westside Highway
Or here in the Hollywood hills"

And yes, it's over
And yes, now the powerful have found me
It was beautiful to see
It was how we're meant to be
It was love, no matter what they say

It's wonderful to be here

Abraham, my father, had a girl he called his angel
I made my excuses and I like the way it feels

The officer asked "How did it start?"
Oh sh*t, "You know, I wish I knew," I said
"On Highbury Fields, the Westside Highway
Or here in the Hollywood hills"

And yes, it's over
Oh yes, now the powerful have found me
It was beautiful to see
It was how I'm meant to be
It was love, no matter what they say

It's wonderful to be here

"Tangled Man" by Green Gartside

I am delighted to hear some new music from songwriting genius Green Gartside of Scritti Politti fame (previously here). He explains the genesis of his new single, "Tangled Man" below. His voice is still as sweet and clear as ever. I was lucky enough to see him on his comeback tour for Scritti Politti in San Francisco in 2006 and he sounded just like this.

"Recently, in an interview for a forthcoming book about art and music in Leeds in the 70’s and 80’s, the author asked me, as an aside, if it were true that I was wearing Morris Dancer’s leg bells at the 1976 gig there by the Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned and Heartbreakers as other interviewees present that night had reported. My DNA was reconfigured that evening so my memory is hazy but it is very likely that I WAS wearing the leg bell pads made for me by a school friend some years before. In fact I may well have gone to the gig straight from the evening Morris dancing lessons I attended at Leeds university.

Because before punk gave me the liberty and license to make my own music I was geekily obsessed with 'folk'. When I was fourteen I was enraptured by the Fairport Convention album 'Liege and Lief' and became an underage regular at Dublin Moran’s folk club at the Castle, a very insalubrious pub down Newport docks. It’s there I was made aware of the Topic record label and the music of the Watersons, Martin Carthy (who I subsequently stalked . . . ask him) and Anne Briggs. The beautiful melodies Anne sang unaccompanied were profoundly affecting, her unornamented voice a precursor to the anti-professionalism of DIY. For a long while I walked about dressed like a 19th century farm labourer (with a bit of eyeliner) in a kind of hypnagogic reverie to an inner soundtrack of Northumbrian pipe tunes, Wassailing songs and Morris dances. Jesus.

Forward some 40 odd years and my friend and Scritti Politti bandmate Rhodri Marsden had been contacted to do an arrangement of an Anne Briggs song for a project with which he was involved. Knowing I was a fan he suggested maybe I’d like to take on the task. I was dead keen and recorded myself at home playing and singing my versions of a couple of the very few songs Annie had written many years ago. Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee at Rough Trade heard the stuff and liked it.. so here we are. . .

Right I’m off to find a couple of hankies and have a quick caper to Lads A Bunchum and The Shepherds Hey. See you soon."

Happy Birthday, Green!

Happy Birthday, Green!

Green Gartside was born this day in 1955 in Cardiff, Wales. After studying art, he started a post-punk group called Scritti Politti (a rhyming version of "political writings" in Italian). They released an album called "Songs To Remember" in 1982, but it wasn't until Green reformed the group with different members that they enjoyed success. In 1985, he released the highly influential album "Cupid & Psyche85" which produced the hit songs "Absolute", "The Word Girl", "Perfect Way," and the amazing "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)." He faded from the spotlight for a spell but sporadically released some wonderful collections of music, namely 1999's "Anomie & Bonhomie" and "White Bread Black Beer" in 2006.

I loved his blond, heavenly appearance in the 80s, below...but he has since jokingly (or not?) referred to the look as his "Princess Diana phase." I don't care... he was gorgeous.

He ditched the blond in the 90s.

And now he sports a beard. And he is STILL gorgeous. Age becomes him!

Above photo from The New Yorker.

He has worked with such luminaries as the legendary Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Eurythmics, Elvis Costello, Kylie Minogue, Robyn Hitchcock, Tracey Thorn, and Me'Shell Ndegeocello among others. His angelic voice and breathy, blue-eyed soul delivery betray his enormous 6'6" frame. And we are all looking forward to another Scritti Politti release again someday. When you're ready, Green...

And Happy Birthday!

"Wood Beez!"

And here is the Shakespeare-"Midsummer-Night's-Dream" themed "Absolute" from 1985.

BEAUTY: Man--Green Gartside

Green Gartside is the mastermind behind, and the founding member of Scritti Politti, a musical group that has been around since 1977. Back in the 80s, he sported a head of beautiful golden hair and looked like an angel (top two pictures). He took a step back from the public spotlight but re-emerged in 2006 with a new release. Although I miss the long golden tresses, I was pleased to see him looking as he should--older, wiser, with some life and experience in his handsome face (bottom two pictures).

He sings like an angel too--still does. One of Scritti's biggest hits was 1984's "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)" seen below. His breathy, processed delivery combined with a unique interpretation of an American funk/soul sound made for a danceable yet intelligent song.
