BEAUTY: Prints For Winter--Kiyoshi Saito

Kiyoshi Saito (1907 - 1997) was a very influential Japanese printmaker and his stunning winter snow prints from his Winter in Aizu '70 series are presented in a monochromatic color palette, recalling black and white photography, or simply the bleak grey light of winter.

BEAUTY: Art for Day of the Dead--José Guadalupe Posada

The engraving/printmaking art of José Guadalupe Posada is iconic. He lived from 1852 to 1913 working as a lithographer, engraver, and cartoonist (or what might be termed a caricaturist because he made drawings that were later photographed for publications such as "Argos," "Gil Blas" and "Biblioteca del Niño Mexicano.") Pasada worked at a time when photo-mechanical technology was in its infancy but growing in use. Earlier in his career his images were mainly lithographs and engravings. His images are among the most widely seen and his legacy perhaps the most influential of all Mexican artists yet his name has yet to achieve the level of recognition as that of artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo or Rufino Tamayo. These classic calaveras images are synonymous with Día de los Muertos itself.

This is arguably Pasada's most famous image, a female skeleton figure called Catrina.
