Happy Record Store Day 2026!
Happy Record Store Day, readers! This day of celebration is something near and dear to my heart: I worked in record stores for nearly a decade, first at a chain called Record Factory here in Northern California, and then at Tower Records. I met incredible people, had incredible times, and even though it might have been frustrating at times for the regular ol' reasons of daily work in a retail environment (it can wear ya down), I look back on my time in record stores with great fondness.
Here is a bit of history about Record Store Day:
Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world.
This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role they play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. For several years, 60% or more of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.
On the first Record Store Day, Metallica spent hours at Rasputin Music in San Francisco meeting their fans and now each year hundreds of artists—both internationally famous and from the block--flock to record stores around the world for performances, signings, meet and greets and to fill their own shopping bags with music. In 2009, Jesse "Boots Electric" Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) declared himself the "Record Store Day Ambassador" as a way of shouting out how important the stores were to artists and since then Joshua Homme (Eagles of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age), Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Chuck D, Dave Grohl, Metallica, St. Vincent, Run The Jewels, Pearl Jam, Brandi Carlile, Fred Armisen and Taylor Swift have worn the annual ceremonial sash.
Throughout its 15 years, cities across the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston, Raleigh and Las Vegas have declared Record Store Day an official holiday. In 2013, Co-Founder Michael Kurtz was made a Chevalier of the Ordre Des Arts et Des Letters in France, honoring Record Store Day's contribution to the cultural and artistic life of the French people. That same year, the organizers of Record Store Day accepted the Independent Spirit Award from NARM (now the Music Biz Association). In 2015, Record Store Day was named the Marketplace Ally of the Year by A2IM, an organization of independent music labels.

Your barber will see you now, right this way...
Gentlemen,...and why not ladies too,...imagine having your hair cut and for the men, beard trimmed at the incredible Eredi Zucca in Milan, founded in 1652. Located at Via Bigli, 6, 20121, the Neo-Classical interiors feature ebonized paneled walls, intricate mosaic floors, coffered ceilings, large plaster portrait medallions, and only three private care areas with luxurious green velvet barber chairs. They sell hair, body, and beard care products through their site (although delivery to the US is probably suspended due to the current confusion of bizarre, whimsical tariffs). I really love the wunderkammer (German, meaning "wonder cabinet") or cabinet of curiosities on their homepage where they display wares amongst treasures both natural and man-made. Gorgeous!

The York Ghost Merchants
Their website offers a delightful summary:
Welcome to the Ghost Merchants
The ancient city of York has a reputation for being the most haunted city in Europe, perhaps even the world. There is rich tradition here of ghost story-telling which stretches back for many centuries. Ghosts are an integral although undeniably obscure part of our city’s story. York Ghosts are firmly embedded in this history.
Each York Ghost is handmade in our own workshops, combining the best of British materials with the sagacity and resource of generations of Guild craftsmen and women.
Our business follows the traditions imposed by The Sorrowful Guild of Master Ghost Makers. We adhere to traditional values and methods, our ghosts are always made by hand and the techniques that we use ensure that each York Ghost is a true original, complete with an embossed maker’s mark.
York Ghosts are individually packaged in exquisite travelling boxes featuring a hand drawn Ghost Merchants shop, to make the ghost feel at home on its journey from the Shambles to far away places. The Original York Ghost is wrapped in an 1852 map of York, and our Little York Ghost comes in the “Boo” box with oval gilt edged viewing aperture.
Our ghosts are made by hand in small batches and we do not operate a mass production business model. Our shop at No.6 Shambles is open 6 days a week and has over 600 Ghosts to choose from. Our second location ‘The Dispensary’ in St Anthony’s Garden opened in 2023 and stocks Original Ghosts, Little Ghosts and Phantoms.
Every ghost is unique, “with a spirit all its own”
Our one concern is your delight.

The Ice Cream Project at The Village Hall 2024
If you're in London, you have a few more weeks to visit Anya Hindmarch's's summer pop up ice cream shop (previously here)! Returning for its third year, The Ice Cream Project has come home to The Village from 7th June – 18th August, serving a line up of unexpectedly delicious ice creams and sorbets. There are some brand new flavors--with a few return cameos--based on Anya Hindmarch’s favorite cult food brands.
I am a huge fan of interestingly flavored (including savory as well as sweet!) ice creams, sorbets, and granitas and Anya Hindmarch has created some wild flavors. I wish I were going to be in London this summer to sample some of these amazing flavors!

The Future Perfect House, Los Angeles
David Alhadeff, founder of design gallery The Future Perfect, and his husband Jason Duzansky, have moved into a new home in the heart of Hollywood. The gallery has shown its work by an impressive roster of artists in residential settings in New York, san Francisco, and Los Angeles. And now, Alhadeff and Duzansky's home is the latest venue for The Future Perfect.
https://www.thefutureperfect.com/locations/los-angeles/
The gallery site says:
"The Future Perfect’s Goldwyn House, located at the base of the Hollywood Hills, presents visitors with a residential concept gallery. The home was built in 1916 by architect Arthur S. Heineman and most notably occupied by the famed movie producer, Samuel Goldwyn. The experiential and exclusive environment of old Hollywood residence and gallery in one creates a unique space to view culturally important works in a novel way.
Collectors, design professionals and casual admirers are all welcome to explore a rigorously curated collection of hard-to-find, limited edition and one-of-a-kind contemporary art and design shown throughout this expansive home and its accompanying gardens.
Consistent with The Future Perfect’s history of boundary-breaking and participatory interior curation, the Goldwyn House is, first and foremost, an experiential space. We look forward to welcoming you."
I love the artisanal eclectic mix of objects juxtaposed with the more traditional elements of the house like the plaster molding. This blend creates a wonderful design tension that catches the eye. And no element is too splashy or attention-seeking. In fact, the entire house is rather understated and subtle on first viewing, but look closely at the objects and how they arranged, the wallpaper backgrounds, the rugs, and the carefully curated palette.

The Ice Cream Project at The Village Hall
I am huge fan of interestingly flavored (including savory as well as sweet!) ice creams, sorbets, and granitas and Anya Hindmarch has created some wild flavors based on classic British flavors for a summer pop up shop in London. Her site lists the inspirations:
The Ice Cream Project
Our high summer concept store, The Ice Cream Project, will be open at The Village from 9th July - 28th August, serving up a collection of unexpected and delicious ice creams and sorbets which celebrate Anya Hindmarch’s favourite cult food brands.
With sleek silver freezers packed full of ice cream pots, the Ice Cream Project is a minimalist temple to the joy of ice cream and sorbet, with a twist – the household names inspiring our ice creams are typically found in the pantry rather than the freezer; think savoury sauces, condiments, tea, breakfast cereals and even baked beans. Plus, discover the inspiration behind the taste sensations – our Anya Brands accessories collection.
