BEAUTY: Murals--Mantra

Mantra is the nom d'art of a French muralist who has crated some stunning pieces on residential and commercial buildings around Europe and South America. These trompe l’oeil shadow boxes full of butterfly specimens are gigantic and so lyrical...

BEAUTY: Installation--Brandon Vickerd

Canadian Brandon Vickerd installed his Passenger pieces in public spaces for maximum effect. Passenger 1 was on display at the Gare Centrale in Montreal for the exhibition Art Souterrian. Passenger 2 (with the chicks) was on the street in Ontario for the exhibition Supercrawl. It is startling to see animals spilling out of a hood where a human face should be and brings to mind the clash between the natural animal world and the man-mad world of cities. Conversely though, it feels like a comparison is being made between these two spheres...perhaps it speaks to the sense that we all, ultimately, are animals.

BEAUTY: Street Art--Borondo

Street artist and muralist Borondo has been working on glass more frequently and the results are arresting. He recently created this glass cube full of "spectators" for an art installation in Rome.

His usual method is to paint onto the glass surface and then scratch off the paint to create depth and design. Look at the bottom photo for a close-up of this technique...

BEAUTY: Art--Jerm IX

Jerm IX, whose given name is Jeremiah, considers himself to be a street artist, urban explorer, poet, lyricist, and activist. He creates stencils of his own poetry, commentaries on current culture, and pointed observations, and posts them around Vancouver, where he lives and works.

Some of the pieces can be heartbreaking, referencing a life that has seen difficulty and pain. His work is powerful, raw, and honest. They feel like works that deserve respect for their directness and authenticity.
