R.I.P. Marianne Faithfull

R.I.P. Marianne Faithfull. It seemed that for most of her life, as sung by former boyfriend Mick Jagger, wild horses could not drag her away. She survived heroin addiction, anorexia, homelessness, and near-death from COVID. But now she's gone and she leaves behind a fascinating life and artistic catalog.

I first became aware of her in 1980 when she released "Broken English," a sort of "comeback" album...or at least a "transformation" album that saw her go from 60s-70s personality to contemporary, cutting edge artist. Here she is singing the amazing, pulsing title track.

Her version of the lovely "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" was also on this album.

She delighted fans in 2002 with her "Kissin' Time" release that saw her collaborate with Beck, Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Blur, Pulp, and Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). Here is the funky Beck/Faithfull tune "Sex With Strangers" starring supermodel Kate Moss.

Thanks for the music, Marianne. Have fun frolicking with those wild horses...

"Death Valley High" by Orville Peck and Beck

What an amazing collaboration between Peck and Beck! This fantastic song, "Death Valley High" sounds like something Tom Jones would have sang in 1969 (without Beck's rap, of course). Look for Sharon Stone's "eff off" moment...

"Skipping Like A Stone" by The Chemical Brothers with Beck

This song, "Skipping Like A Stone" by The Chemical Brothers with Beck on vocals is good but it is the video that is of interest here...I love The Stone of Justice. If only it were real...

From their new release "For That Beautiful Feeling" out now.

"Wide Open" by The Chemical Brothers with Beck

Stunning special effect in this video for "Wide Open," a melancholy dance song by The Chemical Brothers (previously here) with Beck (previously here and here) on vocals. I am reminded of the ceramic work of Jennifer McCurdy (previously here) and the special effect of the AI robot in "Ex Machina" (here).

"Black Wave" and "Waking Light" by Beck

I can't get enough of Beck's gorgeous new release "Morning Phase." It is a captivating mix of folk, soft psychedelic, and orchestral, expressed through introspective gentle ballads and profoundly gripping melodies. Here are two examples of the latter, the haunting "Black Wave" and the achingly lovely "Waking Light." The entire collection of songs is slow, hazy, pensive, perfect to play on a dawning summer morning...

Currently listening to...

...Marianne Faithfull's 2002 recording of "Sex With Strangers" from her amazing "Kissin' Time" release. She co-wrote this song with Beck who also plays on the track.

Marianne is a legend. Wild horses can't drag her away...
