BEAUTY: Embroidery--Peter Frederiksen

I am tickled by and subsequently fascinated with the wonderful embroidery work of textile artist Peter Frederiksen. He uses iconic imagery from classic cartoons. He explained in an interview with gallerytalk.net:

"These cartoon characters are the basis of my entire aesthetic. I like that this imagery is already engraved in people's minds. As a child, like many others, I used to watch 'Looney Tunes' with my dad on Saturday mornings. They're really beautiful films - hand-drawn, colorful and funny. They're art, it's that simple. However, these cartoons are also super brutal and often racist. You can tell that they obviously come from a different time. I work with the imagery of the so-called 'Golden Age of American Animation.'...The term 'Golden Age' seems like a provocation today: the concept of a past, better time, which makes you think about what could have been, leads nowhere. Things aren't going well right now. But it's crazy to think that things would have somehow been better 50 or 60 years ago. For me, the cartoon aesthetic is a way to engage with this idea."

BEAUTY" Mixed Media Art--Marie-Claude Marquis

The arch, post-modern, mixed media art of Marie-Claude Marquis makes me giggle. She works on vintage ceramic plates by embellishing them with pithy conceptual sayings, but also creates original embroidery panels and tapestries.

She also has an Etsy store you can access through her website!

BEAUTY: Digital Art--Andrea Zanatelli

Artist Andrea Zanatelli has worked with  Florence Welch and Courtney Love on some amazing projects, and his Embroidery Series captures all the Edwardian, Gothic Revival, Pre-Raphaelite, and Victorian sense of his work. These are not actual embroidered pieces but digital composites of individual images of fabrics and embroidered and beaded objects. Stunning...

BEAUTY: Fabric Art--Rima Day

Rima Day makes books and letters whose pages are sheer fabric onto which she stitches veins and circulatory systems. The results are startling but also lyrical.

The Historic Tale Construction Kit of Bayeux

The Bayeux Tapestry, created sometime in the 1070s, is an embroidered cloth nearly 230 feet long and 20 inches tall that depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings. It tells the story from the point of view of the conquering Normans but is now agreed to have been made in England. The artefact has survived time and wars, and is now displayed at the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux.

And now you can create your very own ancient tapestry by using the Bayeux Historic Tale Construction Kit! You can choose from figures from the actual tapestry like warriors, townsfolk, animals, buildings, and trees.

And you can finish it with a pithy or witty comment (or some song lyrics) to add extra gravitas or humor.

BEAUTY: Fabric Art--Victoria Rose Richards

English fabric artist Victoria Rose Richards makes unique, charming embroidered pieces: she shows aerial views of British landscapes featuring fields, forests, rivers, lakes (look for tiny boaters!), farm lands, and flowered meadows, some seen through wispy clouds.
