"All This Will Feel Like A Dream..."

Here is another poster by multimedia artist and professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Piotr Szyhalski (previously here). An enormous banner of this work (25' tall by 17.5' wide) was hung at Szyhalski's new exhibition of his work at the Northwest Arts Center in Minot, North Dakota, on view now through October 14, 2023.

A War Anywhere...

Poster by multimedia artist and professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Piotr Szyhalski. About the image, he says:

"For all the territorial obsessions, and the constant desire to redraw and defend the borders, war seems so obviously not contained by them. It spills, it spreads, it infects all. When we look away, pretend it’s not us, or that it’s not here: violence seeps through. Corrupts. Its malignant influence gnawing away at our humanity.

In the 20th century alone we killed more people in wars and ideologically or religiously motivated carnage, than in the entire human history prior to 20th century combined. Looking at our current century so far does not give much confidence. Ukraine, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Colombia, ... the list goes on, and on. And then there is the US, a country only 246 years old, yet at war almost constantly. Only 15 out of the 246 years we were not directly engaged in war somewhere, with someone, for some reason…"

"What Have You Got Toulouse?"--A 1970-1971 Calendar by Hallmark

I came across this relic on The Peculiar Manicule, a great site that features illustration from the 60s and 70s. This is the look of things as I was growing up, on television, in magazines, in films, on tee shirts... and this 1970-1971 16-month calendar from Hallmark (yes, Hallmark!) called "What Have You Got Toulouse?" reminds me so much of certain Saturday afternoon cartoons, The Beatles' psychedelic "Yellow Submarine," the comedy show "Laugh In," and especially Saul Bass' legendary short film "Why Man Creates," previously here!
