BEAUTY: Sculpture--Jan Vogelpoel

Australian sculptor Jan Vogelpoel works in clay to realize some fantastic biomorphic forms. She says she is inspired both by Japanese and Mid-Century Modern design. In addition to sculptures, she also creates lighting, vases, framed wall tiles, and in the last two images below, multi-piece relief wall sculptures.

BEAUTY: Painting--Laurence Jones

Painter Laurence Jones has been obsessed, like many people, with the incredibly famous (and rightly so) Stahl House. The house --or Case House Study #22 as it was known--was built in 1959 by Pierre Koenig in the Hollywood Hills area for the Stahl family. It is a masterpiece of Mid-Century Modern Architecture, showing up in films (Tim Allen's character lived there in the comedy sci-fi film "Galaxy Quest"), television shows (even an animated version showed up on "The Simpsons"!), and countless advertisements for things like food, kitchen appliances, and furniture. Jones is clearly entranced with the clean angularity of the cantilevered house and the equally important view of Los Angeles.

BEAUTY: Painting--Stefan Kürten

Stefan Kürten has quite an affinity for Mid-Century Modern homes and architecture. His groovy, solarized images feel like they are form that time period. But the really amazing thing about these canvases of ink and acrylic are their size! Watch the video below.

BEAUTY: Painting--Laurence Jones

It seems like summer has only just started here in Northern California--it came late this year, with a few false start heat wave days, but late none the less. So in these glorious, waning days of summer (already!), I am loving these twilight images of swimming pools at famous Mid-Century Modern homes (including the Stahl House!) here in the west by Laurence Jones.
