BEAUTY: Sculpture--Jan Vogelpoel

Australian sculptor Jan Vogelpoel works in clay to realize some fantastic biomorphic forms. She says she is inspired both by Japanese and Mid-Century Modern design. In addition to sculptures, she also creates lighting, vases, framed wall tiles, and in the last two images below, multi-piece relief wall sculptures.

BEAUTY: Sculpture--Nichola Theakston

English artist Nichola Theakston creates arresting portraits of animals in clay that are then cast in bronze with marvelous patinas. The sense of the sculptures is that they are artifacts from ancient civilizations (namely Egypt, as she names some of them after Egyptian animal gods like Bastet and Sekhmet), and are mounted as such, on iron displays. And Theakston manages to imbue her figures with the same mythical, revered, god-like qualities the Egyptians imbued on these animals.

BEAUTY: Sculpture--Emmanuelle Piquart

I am enchanted with le petit peuple de terre, the Little People of Clay as sculptor and ceramic artist Emmanuelle Piquart calls them. Just look at their lovely innocent faces, all shining and happy. These tiny busts mounted on long metal stands are absolutely charming. There a lot of photos on her website of her atelier in Marseille where she makes other ceramic objects as well as 2D art. I'd love to visit...but more than that, I would love to have some of these sweet innocents gracing my home.
