Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day 2026!

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, is a celebration of the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native Americans and Indigenous peoples throughout the United States.

Observed on the second Monday in October, the day also invites reflection on the lasting impacts of colonisation and the need to honour Indigenous perspectives and experiences. It's a way to recognise the original inhabitants of this land, their traditions and ongoing influence on American life.

The movement began in the 1970s as Native activists challenged the traditional Columbus Day narrative. South Dakota established Native American Day in 1990, and in 1992 Berkeley, California, became the first US city to officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Since then, it's spread nationwide.

Today, it's recognised in various forms by 17 states including California, the District of Columbia, and more than two hundred cities and municipalities. Some places have replaced Columbus Day entirely while others observe both. Although it's not a federal holiday, its growth reflects a broader effort to honour living indigenous cultures and ensure their stories remain central to our shared history.

BEAUTY: Ceramics--Brenda Holzke

I am smitten with the marvelous, visceral work of ceramicist Brenda Holzke. Her pieces have a tribal and even Neolithic (and in a modern context, Brutalist) sense about them, with their Cy Twombly-esque graphite doodles and mark-making designs. And I love how she also incorporates materials like fabric, pencil, hemp, paper, plastics, metals, and yarn along with the usual stoneware clay, terra cotta, paperclay, and various glazes and slips.

Future Primitive by HOM

Created by multi-disciplinary artist, stylist, jeweler, milliner, and accessory designer Malakai, these ear and nose cuffs look like pieces worn by tribes not yet born. He has created pieces for Beyonce, FKA Twigs, Erykah Badu, Madonna, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna as well as hats, headpieces, crowns, and mitres for Rick Owens' AW '17 collection. And he created several headpieces for celebrities attending the Met Gala last week!

And here is some of his work on the aforementioned celebrities:

BEAUTY: Painting--Deedee Cheriel

The deliberately naïve art work of Deedee Cheriel is beautifully fascinating: a bit of Native American iconography via Plains and Pacific Northwest, a bit of Egyptian hieroglyphics, and a bit of arcane symbology reminiscent of Tarot cards. And of course, regular readers know I am always in love with human bodies with animal heads...

Top to bottom: unknown; unknown; Dark Night Soliloquy; The Gathering; The Gift; The Manifestation; The Riches of Labor; The Source of Everything is Profound; Then The Cosmos Had Their Way; Hera and Hestia say goodbye to Hebe
