A White (Ad-Free) Christmas

This last week, Canadian creative agency Wunder placed blank white ads on billboards, buses, bus stops and even print ads in Halifax, Nova Scotia in an effort to cut down on the visual and auditory noise of the season. Much appreciated, Wunder!

In honor of National Poetry Month, here is my original poem, "White."

White

You can’t recall how or when
but now you know what’s true.
You don’t have to ask anymore.
They are here,
they can see you,
they can hurt you—they want to.
Here are instructions for escape:
the way is always up.
You slip back to your childhood
home, to the second floor,
to your room with the toybox
and the window facing the backyard,
the unknown forest beyond
as far as you can see,
the full moon over dense trees,
glazing them silver-white.
That’s the route.
Outside, crickets rasp the air.
Inside, silence.
You feel your wings spreading,
white feathers as you step through the window,
white wings carrying you over
white trees,
white,
everything white.

White balloons claim spaces left vacant by humans in the magical photography of French fine art photographer Charles Pétillon.

He says, "Ces invasions de ballons sont des métaphores. Elles ont pour but de changer le point de vue sur ce que nous côtoyons chaque jour sans y porter attention. C'est notre regard que j'essaie d'aviver, permettant ainsi de passer d'une perception pratique à une émotion visuelle." ("These balloon invasions are metaphors. Their aim is to change the point of view on what we see each day without paying attention to it. It is our view that I try to revitalize, thus making it possible to go from a practical perception to a visual emotion.")

BEAUTY: Interior Design--Hueso Restaurant

Architect and designer Ignacio Cadena designed the stunning all (off) white restaurant Hueso for his brother, Chef Alfonso Cadena. Located in Guadalajara, Mexico, the walls in the space are collages of compartmentalized boxes that hold bleached bones and white cooking utensils. In fact, the name of the restaurant, Hueso means bone in Spanish. The concept is bold and starts on the outside of the renovated 1940s building which was clad in white ceramic tiles featuring graphic black lines that recall stitching. The name of the business is discreetly spelled out at the entrance. Even the bespoke plates are white with delicate black lines.
