BEAUTY: Clothing--Ziggy Chen

Shanghai-born designer Ziggy Chen established his eponymous label in 2012 and quickly established himself as a formidable talent with technical fabric innovation and avant-garde design. His minimalist sensibility was inspired by ancient Chinese designs from the Song and Qing dynasties but this wonderful SS '24 collection--titled INADVERTENCY and shown at Paris Fashion Week in the form of a lookbook--feels like he is following Vivienne Westwood (previously here) and the rigorously historical work of John Alexander Skelton (previously here). Clearly investigating antique clothing from Europe, the collection feels artistic, and very fashion forward because of the use of patterns and silhouettes from long ago. The mud, sepia, rust, and soot color palette adds to the nostalgic Old World sense (reminiscent of Westwood's legendary FW '83 Nostalgia of Mud collection) and was created by techniques such as yarn dyeing, washing, over-dyeing, and printing. I adore the last three looks... the asymmetry, the draping, the historic echoes...just gorgeous.
