BEAUTY: Painting--Teddi Parker

Regular readers know that I love when artists use paint like cake frosting and Teddi Parker's paintings are scrumptious. She says she is self-taught and I think that lack of formal training allows her to be fearless with the medium and with color. Her joyous brushwork and liberal use of color in her still life images are a delight.

"Space Iris" by Rus Khasanov

"Space Iris" by video artist Rus is a mesmerizing sight. He explains:

"This abstract 8K video was inspired by the visual similarity of the cosmic nebula and the iris of the eye.

The iris, with its intricate patterns and colors, shares a striking resemblance to the vibrant and colorful cosmic nebula. Just as the eye is a window to the soul, the nebula serves as a window to the vast universe beyond. Both the iris and the cosmic nebula contain a variety of hues and shades that blend and dance together to create a unique and mesmerizing visual display. The iris's delicate curves and lines mirror the sweeping curves and swirls of the nebula's gaseous clouds. The iris, with its distinctive central pupil, recalls the cosmic nebula's central star or black hole, around which the colorful gases and dust swirl.

The cosmic nebula and the iris share a deep artistic connection, as both offer a glimpse into something beyond ourselves, whether it is the inner world of emotions and thoughts or the vast expanse of the cosmos."

BEAUTY: Egg Art For Easter--Elisa Sheehan

I previously celebrated the lovely eggshell art of Elisa Sheehan here, and she has been hard at work creating more beautiful little boxes and larger-scaled pieces featuring her designs. She makes gorgeous art from eggshells based on the Japanese art of kintsugi (previously here) where a piece of broken pottery is fixed using gold. This highlights the crack and the repair, giving the object a sense of history, of use, and of extra value. Sheehan does the same with eggshells which of course must be broken to be used. In her statement about her kintsugi eggs, she says, "I’ve always loved the Japanese art of 'kintsugi' wherein broken pottery is repaired with gold and rather than trying to disguise the break or flaw, it is highlighted and therefore elevated to a status of beauty. Its age is celebrated, its history is seen, its flaws are revered. I think it’s a good way to think about ourselves, others and our relationships as we age - not to try to look like our former, younger selves but to embrace our 'breaks and flaws' and to honor them and see the beauty in them."

BEAUTY: Clothing--Moschino

Moschino's Jeremy Scott can get a bit too cartoony and cheap for me, but I have to say this Fall-Winter '21-'22 collection is pretty interesting. Apparently Scott is a classic film fan and has been watching the Turner Classic Movie channel all during our global COVID quarantine. While in lockdown, Scott has also been painting. Of course both of these elements infiltrated his work and, according to fashion journalist Anders Christian Madsen, he presented a collection that was a mix of "the precision of Old Hollywood tailoring and the spontaneity of hand-painting. The lines of overcoats, tuxedos, and suiting with a 1940s persuasion were enhanced with Post-Impressionist brushstrokes, in some cases creating trompe l’oeil effects that Scott attributed to his passion for the study of painting." I love how he seems to have accented with painted sections the natural lines of shadows and light on a garment--and even the shine of leather on a Tom of Finland-inspired biker outfit! It is definitely cartoony but in the most engaging way possible...

Photographer Tim Tadder's Black Is A Color series takes its inspiration from issues of race.
