Just watched...
..."Up In The Air" starring George Clooney and directed by Jason Reitman.
Still trying to catch up on the ever-growing Netflix queue.
I was expecting some kind of cute, Hollywood “rom-com” and was very pleased to find that “Up In The Air” is nothing of the kind. George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a part-time motivational speaker and full-time “corporate downsizer” (read: an outsider who comes into troubled companies to fire people so the actual managers do not have to do it) who is on the road 300+ days a year. Spending his life "up in the air" or in hotel rooms allows him to isolate himself from any kind of daily experience, which includes having to create a local life and forging relationships. In an airport one evening, he finds a kindred spirit in the form of an assertive, self-confident, sexy woman.
But that is just one aspect of the film which is certainly not a “rom-com” by any means. “Up In The Air” is a film of depth and complexity. It is a drama but also possesses a kind of weighty comedy… a comedy that is intelligent, dependent on a knowledge of human psychology. The film examines the ideas of livelihood, relationships, philosophy, family, isolation, and control over one’s life.
I won’t write anymore than this. I don’t want to give away too much. Suffice to say that this is a movie of substance.
Recommend? Yes, definitely.
