BEAUTY: Interiors--George Nelson
Architect and designer George Nelson (1908–1986) was one of the founders of Modernism, now often referred to as "Mid-Century Modern." Nelson designed homes (the Fairchild House), furniture (the classic "Slat Bench," the "Marshmallow Sofa," the "Coconut Chair"), home furnishings, lighting (the "Bubble Lamp"), and a series of iconic clocks seen below (including the staple that hung on nearly every wall of every home in the 1950s, the "Starburst Clock"). Nelson also had a long and fruitful relationship with the Herman Miller company, a giant of Mid-Century Modern production. His influence is still felt today as many of his pieces are still in production and available for purchase from companies like Herman Miller and Vitra.
