BEAUTY: Clothing--Pronounce

As a part of Pitti Uomo’s guest nation China special project, Pronounce (designers Yushan Li and Jun Zhou) presented an imaginative, enticing SS '20 collection. Their inspiration came from a trip to Xi’an, the site where Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s terra-cotta army was found.

"I was amazed that these centuries-old terra-cotta army [statues] stood the testament of time, and the slow process of the excavation they did in the Seventies. There is value in doing something that takes a long time. I think it’s important to remind people of that at this moment," said Li.

I love the mix of traditional Chinese silhouettes (Mao jackets!) and ideas with a modern, free-flowing, sometimes gender-neutral sensibility. It feels powerfully artistic and engaging. The patterns reflecting the terra-cotta warriors and rivets on the wood walls and doors of ancient Chinese palaces seem suggestive and not overly done. The inclusion of the woven mesh perhaps harkens to fishing nets used on the Yangtze (or perhaps I am being overly Romantic). And the dust mop shoes from a cultureless creative space unites it all with some fun.
